I support Lechia Gdańsk and over the years I have been to many of their matches, even though I am not from the area but from Olsztyn. In this post I have gathered the ones I have photos from – matches at the Polsat Plus Arena and a game against Pogoń that I watched while staying in Szczecin – plus a 2012 visit to the old stadium on Traugutta Street, which Lechia no longer used by then. First a short history of the club, and at the end practical tips for anyone going to a match.

Lechia Gdańsk – a short history

Lechia was founded in 1945. Its most famous season was 1982/83: playing in the third tier, it won the Polish Cup and then the Super Cup, and in autumn 1983 it played Juventus in the Cup Winners’ Cup. A second Polish Cup and Super Cup came in 2019, when Lechia also finished third in the league – as it had in 1956. In 2023 it was relegated from the Ekstraklasa and came back a year later.

The old stadium on Traugutta Street

For decades Lechia played at the stadium on Traugutta Street in Wrzeszcz, with green and white stands among the trees. In 2011 the club moved to the new stadium in Letnica. I was here on 23 July 2012, just after Euro 2012 – the stadium was empty, and the wall next to it bore the fans’ mural “Kings of the Big Cities”. It referred to the former alliance of Lechia, Śląsk Wrocław and Wisła Kraków fans – today only the friendship with Śląsk remains.

Polsat Plus Arena

The same day I went to the new stadium in Letnica, built for Euro 2012. It opened in August 2011 with Lechia v Cracovia (1–1). It has 41,620 seats, all under a roof, and its amber-coloured facade refers to Baltic amber. It used to be called PGE Arena, then Stadion Energa Gdańsk, and today Polsat Plus Arena Gdańsk.

On 30 September 2012 Lechia beat Lech Poznań 2–0 in front of about 17,000 spectators. Piotr Wiśniewski scored the first goal, and in the 90th minute Abdou Razack Traoré added a beautiful bicycle-kick goal.

Lechia v Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza 1–1 (20.03.2016)

On 20 March 2016 Lechia drew 1–1 with Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza. They led after Michał Chrapek’s goal in the 25th minute, but Bartłomiej Smuczyński equalised in the 77th.

Lechia v Cracovia 4–2 and Lechia v Arka Gdynia 2–1 (2017)

In spring 2017 Lechia was fighting for the Polish title, and I went to two of their matches. On 25 February they beat Cracovia 4–2 – the goals came from Ariel Borysiuk, Flávio Paixão (penalty), Grzegorz Kuświk and Grzegorz Wojtkowiak, with Krzysztof Piątek scoring twice for Cracovia.

On 17 April, Easter Monday, Lechia won the Tricity derby against Arka Gdynia 2–1 with goals from Marco Paixão and Sławomir Peszko. The fans prepared a display covering the whole stand.

Pogoń Szczecin v Lechia 0–0 (14.08.2017)

While staying in Szczecin, on 14 August 2017 I had the chance to watch Pogoń v Lechia – it ended 0–0. Pogoń was still playing at the old Florian Krygier Stadium – more about it in the post Szczecin – what to see.

Lechia v Śląsk Wrocław 3–1 and the fans’ friendship (01.12.2017)

On 1 December 2017 Lechia beat Śląsk Wrocław 3–1 – Marco Paixão scored twice and his twin brother Flávio added a penalty. The fans unfurled a huge display in the stand.

Lechia and Śląsk fans have had a friendship for years, so they sat together in the stands – with the scarves of both clubs.

Practical information

  • Getting there: Polsat Plus Arena is in Letnica, about 4.5 km north of the Main Town. The easiest way is the SKM train to Gdańsk Stadion Expo, a few minutes’ walk from the stadium.
  • Tickets: buy them online on the club’s website; for matches against popular opponents it is worth buying early.
  • Before the match: arrive early – there are ticket and bag checks at the gates. In winter it can be very cold in the stands despite the roof.
